General information, not legal advice. This directory is built from official Thai embassy and consulate pages, which we read on 14 October 2026. Jurisdictions, services and booking systems change. Confirm with your embassy or consulate before you book, post documents or travel. If anything here differs from the office’s own page, the office’s page wins.

When your family is part Thai, the Thai embassy or consulate becomes a place you visit for life’s paperwork: a new baby, a first Thai passport, a renewed ID card, a document your family in Thailand needs stamped. This page is a map of which office covers you and what each one says it does for families. It is not about visas.

Which Thai office covers me?

Each Thai embassy or consulate-general serves a set area, and most of them only handle you if you live there, or, for a birth, if the child was born there. Washington DC, for example, says it “can only register births or deaths that occur within its jurisdiction”. So start with the office for your state or country, not the nearest one.

What does each office list for families?

“Lists” is the key word: this table shows what each office’s own pages mention. A blank does not mean a service doesn’t exist, only that we didn’t find it on the pages we read. Every row: page checked 14 Oct 2026.

Notes for the United States

There are four full Thai offices in the US: the embassy in Washington DC and consulates-general in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Find your state in the table, then use that office’s pages. New York’s booking page says its online booking is offered to Thai nationals living in its 10 states.

The Washington DC embassy also lists honorary consulates in Coral Gables, Houston, New Orleans, San Juan, Boston, Portland (Oregon) and Honolulu. Its page says they “assist Thais and U.S. citizens in matters related to Thailand” but does not say which services they offer. Don’t assume an honorary consulate can issue a passport or register a birth. Ask your embassy or consulate-general first.

Notes for the United Kingdom

The embassy in London serves the UK and Ireland. Birth registration is free, except for births before 1 March 1992, which cost £10 in cash. Both parents attend, and the certificate can be posted back if you bring a prepaid Royal Mail Special Delivery envelope. The embassy says it “regularly organises mobile consular services across the UK”; its Cardiff visit offered passports, ID cards, birth certificates and legalisation.

Notes for Sweden

The embassy in Stockholm serves Sweden and Latvia. For a birth, you post copies first, staff review them in about one to four weeks, then contact you for an appointment, and you sign in person in Stockholm. Under-20s who are not married can only get a 5-year passport. Both parents come along; if one can’t, the passport page mentions a certified power of attorney in one place and a consent letter from a district office in Thailand in another, so ask the embassy which one they want.

Notes for Australia

The embassy in Canberra and the consulate-general in Sydney are the two full offices. The honorary consulates (Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Hobart, and Adelaide, which is temporarily closed) cannot issue passports, ID cards or civil registration certificates, according to the embassy. For a birth, both Canberra and Sydney want your Australian birth certificate authenticated by DFAT first.

Where to go next

What we couldn’t confirm

  • Los Angeles birth registration. The Los Angeles consulate’s English menu lists passports, ID cards, legalisation and mobile visits, but we didn’t find a birth registration page. Ask the consulate directly.
  • Washington DC’s area for passports and ID cards. Its registration pages list 13 states plus DC and Puerto Rico, but its passport page doesn’t state an area.
  • Sydney and Canberra’s split. Neither office’s pages we read say which states each covers.
  • ID cards in Chicago. We didn’t find an ID card page on Chicago’s English menu.
  • House registration and nationality certificates. None of the office pages we read list tabien baan or a nationality certificate as a service. See the house registration and citizenship guides above.
  • Upcoming mobile visits. The Washington DC and Los Angeles schedules we read showed only completed sessions. Watch the office’s page for new dates.
  • Fees and processing times beyond what is quoted here vary, and some pages don’t list them.

Paperwork is slow everywhere, and it’s fine to ask the same question twice. When in doubt, email or phone the office that covers you. Confirm with your embassy before you go.

Questions people ask

Which Thai consulate covers my US state?

As the offices state: New York covers 10 states from Maine to Ohio; Chicago covers 14 Midwest and central states; Los Angeles covers 12 western states plus Hawaii and the US Pacific territories; and the embassy in Washington DC lists 13 states from Delaware to Texas, plus DC and Puerto Rico, for registration. Check the jurisdiction page of the office before you book.

What does the Thai consulate in New York do for families?

Its pages list Thai birth certificates for children born in its 10 states, passports including a page for people under 20, Thai ID cards, marriage, divorce and death registration, legalisation, and mobile consular visits. Passport and ID card visits are booked online; civil registration and notarial work need no advance booking, but birth registration slots are booked by phone once documents are checked.

Can a Thai honorary consulate issue a passport or birth certificate?

The embassy in Canberra says honorary consulates in Australia cannot issue Thai passports, ID cards or birth, death, marriage and divorce certificates. The Washington DC embassy lists honorary consulates in the US but does not say which services they offer, so ask the embassy or consulate-general first.

Does the Thai embassy in London need an appointment for birth registration?

London's pages are worded differently: one says no appointment is needed and both parents and the child attend in person, another says to email to schedule an appointment. Registration is free for births on or after 1 March 1992. Email the embassy before you go.

Does the Thai embassy in Stockholm register births?

Yes, for births in Sweden or Latvia with at least one Thai parent. You post copies of the documents first, the embassy then books an appointment, and you sign in person in Stockholm. Registration is free.
