TikTok Shop and Shopee in Thailand: how to buy well
You arrive in Thailand needing one adapter plug. Your cousin opens Shopee, and forty minutes later you’ve also ordered a mango-shaped phone stand, a rice cooker that plays a song, and the exact brand of fish sauce your mum can’t get at home. It arrives the next day. Welcome.
Shopee, Lazada and TikTok Shop sell, as far as anyone can tell, everything. Here’s how to buy without regret. Last checked 19 October 2026.
Which app for what?
- Shopee and Lazada are the big marketplaces: you search, compare shops, add to basket. Both have official brand stores alongside small sellers.
- TikTok Shop sells through videos and live streams. A seller demonstrates the product, you buy it from the video. Fun, fast and very good at making you want a thing you didn’t know existed. Read the shop’s reviews before you tap.
Many people check the same item in two apps. Prices, vouchers and delivery times differ, and so do the sellers. For the rest of your phone, see the apps you need in Thailand.
How do you read a listing?
What matters more than the price:
- The shop, not just the item. Rating, number of sales, how long it’s been selling, how fast it replies to chat. An official brand store is marked as such.
- Photo and video reviews from buyers. These are where you find out the “XL” is an Asian XL, or that the colour in the listing photo was optimistic.
- The low-star reviews. Sort by them. One bad review is bad luck; ten saying “fake” is a pattern.
- Where it ships from. Items from abroad take longer. The listing shows the location.
- Too cheap is too cheap. For brand-name electronics, cosmetics and supplements, stick to official stores.
How does cash on delivery work?
Cash on delivery (COD) is common: you pay the courier when the parcel arrives, by cash or, often, by scanning a QR code. And Thai rules now protect you here. Since 3 October 2024, cash-on-delivery and logistics providers must let buyers open the parcel and take photos or video before paying, and buyers can refuse items that are wrong or damaged, according to a summary by the law firm Tilleke & Gibbins and Bangkok Post.
Our tip: film the unboxing anyway, COD or not. If you need to return something, a video of you opening the sealed parcel settles most arguments. Paying by QR? See Thai bank accounts and PromptPay.
Shipping and delivery
You’ll need a Thai address and a Thai phone number; the courier calls or messages when they’re near. If you’re staying with family, put the house name or a landmark in the address notes (“blue gate opposite the noodle shop”), plus the name of whoever will be home. Yai will sign for anything.
If your Thai is shaky on the phone, the courier will usually be happy with “put it at the gate” by chat. For the call itself, two of the most useful lines in Thai:
พูดอีกทีได้ไหม
phuut iik thii dai mai
พูดอีกทีได้ไหมครับ
phuut iik thii dai mai khrap
พูดอีกทีได้ไหมคะ
phuut iik thii dai mai kha
Could you say that again?
Literally: “speak again time can (question)”
Better than pretending. Yai would much rather repeat it than talk past you.
Draft: waiting for a native speaker’s review.
พูดช้าๆ หน่อยได้ไหม
phuut chaa chaa noi dai mai
พูดช้าๆ หน่อยได้ไหมครับ
phuut chaa chaa noi dai mai khrap
พูดช้าๆ หน่อยได้ไหมคะ
phuut chaa chaa noi dai mai kha
Could you speak a bit slower?
Literally: “speak slow-slow a-little can (question)”
หน่อย turns it from an instruction into a gentle ask. Works with any elder.
Draft: waiting for a native speaker’s review.
Chatting with sellers
Use the chat in the app, not a phone number or a LINE ID the seller gives you: the in-app chat is the record if something goes wrong. Ask before you buy (size, colour, whether it’s in stock). Thai sellers are used to short messages, English and translation apps. A sticker is a perfectly normal reply.
What we can give you in Thai for now: pointing at the photo and เอาอันนี้ (ao an nii), “I’ll take this one”, and เอายี่ห้อไหน (ao yii-hor nai), “which brand?”, which you’ll mostly hear from Yai when she sends you to buy fish sauce. Seller-chat lines such as “is this in stock?” and “do you have it in a medium?” aren’t in our reviewed Thai yet. End with ขอบคุณ (khorp khun), “thank you”, and you’re the nicest customer of the day.
Returns, refunds and complaints
- Use the app first. Each platform has its own return window and process, shown on the order. Don’t confirm receipt until you’ve checked the item; on Shopee, for example, refunds go back to your card or wallet on timelines its help centre lists.
- Keep everything in the in-app chat, with your unboxing video.
- If that fails, Thailand’s Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB) takes complaints on 1166, the OCPB Connect app or ocpb.go.th. It received 8,465 complaints in May and June 2026, most about online purchases (Pattaya Mail).
- For scams (a “seller” who asks you to pay outside the app, a fake delivery link), the anti-online-scam hotline is 1441 (Thairath English).
What we couldn’t confirm
- Each platform’s current return window in Thailand. They differ by platform, by shop type and over time; read the one on your order.
- Exactly how buyer protection holds payment on each app. Check the app’s own help pages.
Practise the market before the app
Online or at the market, the Thai is the same: “this one too”, “how much is this bag?”, “no bag, thanks”. The Visiting Thailand moment in Reply Thai has them as quick replies.
Reply Thai for iPhone: coming soonEmail me at launchThai words on this page are a draft until a native speaker has reviewed them. Last checked 19 October 2026.
Questions people ask
Can I pay cash on delivery in Thailand?
Yes, cash on delivery (COD) is widely offered on Thai shopping apps. Since 3 October 2024, Thai rules require COD and logistics providers to let buyers open the parcel and take photos or video before paying, and buyers can refuse items that are wrong or damaged.
Which is better in Thailand, Shopee, Lazada or TikTok Shop?
None is better for everything. Many people check the same item on two of them. What matters more is the individual shop: its rating, how long it has been selling, photo reviews from real buyers and whether it is an official brand store.
Where do I complain about an online order in Thailand?
First use the app's own return or dispute process. If that fails, Thailand's Office of the Consumer Protection Board takes complaints on hotline 1166, the OCPB Connect app or ocpb.go.th. For scams, the anti-online-scam hotline is 1441.
How do I chat with a Thai seller?
Use the chat button in the app, so there's a record. Short messages are normal. Thai sellers are used to English and to translation apps, and a polite ขอบคุณ (khorp khun), “thank you”, at the end is always nice.
