Worked example

Born in 1995? Add 543: you were born in 2538. That is ปีกุน (pii gun), the year of the pig. Born before 13 April, the traditional count gives you the year before: ปีจอ (pii jor), the dog.

How this works

The year. Thailand’s official calendar counts from the Buddha’s passing, 543 years ahead of the Western one. The Thai year has started on 1 January since 1941; before that it began on 1 April, so dates from January to March before 1941 are 542 years apart.

The animal. Thailand uses the same twelve animals as the Chinese zodiac, with its own year names. When the animal changes varies: the traditional Thai count switches at Songkran, 13 April; Thai Chinese families may switch at Chinese New Year (late January to mid-February, a different date every year); and many people just use 1 January. The converter shows the calendar-year animal and, for birthdays before 13 April, the traditional one too.

You’ll see พ.ศ. years on Thai birth certificates, ID cards and house registrations. More on the calendar, and every 2027 holiday, is in Thai public holidays 2027.

Thai on this page comes from our app, Reply Thai, and our guides, and stays a draft until a native speaker has reviewed it. How we review Thai.

How to convert a year by hand

  1. Western to Thai: add 543. 1995 + 543 = 2538.
  2. Thai to Western: subtract 543. 2533 − 543 = 1990.
  3. Find the animal: look the Western year up in the animal table; the cycle repeats every 12 years.

Questions people ask

What year is it in Thailand?

2026 is 2569 in the Thai Buddhist Era (พ.ศ.), and 2027 will be 2570. Thailand counts years 543 ahead of the Western calendar, and the number changes on 1 January.

How do I convert a Thai year to a Western year?

Subtract 543. A Thai year 2533 is 1990. To go the other way, add 543.

When does the Thai year animal change?

It depends who you ask. In the traditional Thai count the year takes the next animal at Songkran, on 13 April. Thai Chinese families may switch at Chinese New Year, which moves between late January and mid-February. Many people simply use the calendar year.

I was born in January. What is my Thai year animal?

By the calendar year, it is that year’s animal. By the traditional Songkran count, anyone born from 1 January to 12 April takes the animal of the year before. Both answers are used, so ask your family which one they go by.

Why do some old Thai dates differ by 542 instead of 543?

Before 1941 the Thai year began on 1 April. For dates from 1 January to 31 March before 1941, the difference is 542; otherwise it is 543.
