Dating apps in Thailand: etiquette, safety and Thai

By lukkrueng.com editorsLast checked Published

Dating as a luk khrueng in Thailand comes with its own plot twists. Your profile says one country, your face says another, and your match’s first message might be “are you Thai?” in English, followed by surprise when you answer in Thai, followed by surprise when your Thai runs out after the third line. All of this is fine. This page is the gentle guide: which apps, how people tend to behave, how to stay safe, and some Thai to start with. Last checked 19 October 2026.

Which dating apps do people use in Thailand?

We couldn’t find reliable user numbers, but we did find what people talk about. In social-media listening data for May 2024, Dataxet found Tinder had 77% of dating-app mentions on Thai social media, followed by Coffee Meets Bagel (12%), Her (8%), Bumble (2%) and Omi (1%). That’s mentions, not users, but it matches what most people will tell you: Tinder is the default, and the others are where people go for something more specific.

Plenty of Thai couples still meet the old way: through friends, at work, at a cousin’s wedding. And yes, your aunties are also a dating app, with no privacy settings.

What’s the etiquette?

Every person is different, so take these as tendencies, not rules:

  • Gentle beats bold. A friendly hello and a real question land better than a pick-up line. Being polite isn’t being boring.
  • Nicknames come early. Thai people go by their nickname, so asking for it is natural. More in Thai nicknames explained.
  • Age comes up. Who’s older decides whether someone is พี่ (phii) or น้อง (norng), so “what year were you born?” isn’t rude, it’s grammar.
  • Stickers are a language. A cute sticker is a perfectly good reply.
  • Family matters. If it gets serious, you’ll meet the family, and they will feed you and ask questions. That’s a whole guide of its own: meeting your Thai partner’s family.
  • Respect a slow reply or a no. Silence is a common way to say no, everywhere, and it’s not a puzzle to solve.

Friendly openers in Thai

Your Thai doesn’t need to be perfect. Trying is charming. Start with a greeting, then something real:

ว่าไง

waa ngai

Hey, what’s up? (casual)

Literally: “say how”

Same warmth, no particle. For cousins and friends your age, not for elders.

Draft: waiting for a native speaker’s review.

Then the nickname question, ชื่อเล่นอะไรอ่ะ (chue len a-rai a), “what’s your nickname?”, and yours: เราชื่อมิว (rao chue Miu), “I’m Mew”, with your own nickname in place of Mew. If you’re curious about the phii-or-norng question: เกิดปีไหนอ่ะ (gert pii nai a), “what year were you born?”.

Be honest about your Thai early. It takes the pressure off both of you:

ฟังออก แต่พูดไม่ค่อยเก่ง

fang ork, tae phuut mai khoi geng

ฟังออก แต่พูดไม่ค่อยเก่งครับ

fang ork, tae phuut mai khoi geng khrap

ฟังออก แต่พูดไม่ค่อยเก่งค่ะ

fang ork, tae phuut mai khoi geng kha

I can follow it, but I’m not great at speaking.

Literally: “listen out, but speak not very skilled”

The honest answer to “do you understand Thai?”. It tells them to keep talking to you.

Who is speaking?

Draft: waiting for a native speaker’s review.

สำเนียงอาจจะแปลกๆ

sam-niang aat ja plaek plaek

สำเนียงอาจจะแปลกๆครับ

sam-niang aat ja plaek plaek khrap

สำเนียงอาจจะแปลกๆค่ะ

sam-niang aat ja plaek plaek kha

My accent might be a bit funny.

Literally: “accent maybe strange-strange”

Say it with a laugh. Doubling แปลก softens it to “a bit odd”.

Who is speaking?

Draft: waiting for a native speaker’s review.

When the chat is going well and it feels mutual: ขอไลน์หน่อย (khor lai noi), “can I get your LINE?”. And for the first date: ไปเที่ยวกันป่ะ (pai thiao gan pa), “shall we go out?”, then เจอกันกี่โมงดี (jer gan gii mong dii), “what time should we meet?”. These are casual, friend-to-friend lines, right for someone your age, not for their grandmother.

How do you stay safe?

Romance scams are common. Thai police recorded 1,435 romance-scam cases, with losses over 476 million baht, between 17 March and 31 December 2023, and in February 2024 they warned about these patterns (Khaosod English):

  • Fake profiles with stolen or AI-generated photos that build trust, then ask for money.
  • “Investment” tips. A match who wants to teach you trading or move you to an investment app is a scam, every time.
  • Sextortion: pressure into explicit video calls that are recorded and used for blackmail.
  • Drinks: police advise not to accept drinks or food from strangers.

What helps:

  • Never send money to someone you haven’t met, whatever the story.
  • Video-call before you meet, and meet somewhere public, in daylight for the first time. Tell a friend or cousin where you’ll be.
  • Get yourself home. Book your own ride with your own app.
  • Report scams to the anti-online-scam hotline 1441 (Thairath English). If you’re a visitor in trouble, the Tourist Police hotline is 1155.

Practise before the first message

The Thai with friends your age moment in Reply Thai is the casual Thai: nicknames, “what year were you born?”, “can I get your LINE?” and “shall we go out?”, practised as replies, so your second message is as good as your first.

Questions people ask

What dating apps do people use in Thailand?

Tinder is by far the most talked-about. In social-media listening data for May 2024, Dataxet found Tinder had 77% of dating-app mentions on Thai social media, followed by Coffee Meets Bagel (12%), Her (8%), Bumble (2%) and Omi (1%). That measures mentions, not users.

How do I start a chat in Thai on a dating app?

Keep it light. A hello, your nickname and a question: ชื่อเล่นอะไรอ่ะ (chue len a-rai a), “what's your nickname?”, is friendly and very Thai. Honest about your Thai? ฟังออก แต่พูดไม่ค่อยเก่ง (fang ork, tae phuut mai khoi geng), “I can follow it, but I'm not great at speaking”.

How do I avoid romance scams in Thailand?

Thai police warn about fake profiles with stolen or AI-made photos, matches who move on to investment tips, and pressure into video calls that can be used for blackmail. Never send money to someone you haven't met, never move to an investment app, and report scams to the 1441 hotline.

Is it OK to ask for someone's LINE?

Yes, it's how most Thai chats continue, but wait until you've talked a bit and it feels mutual. The casual way to ask is ขอไลน์หน่อย (khor lai noi), “can I get your LINE?”. If they'd rather stay in the app for now, that's a fine answer.
