Thai BL series: a guide to the shows and the fandom

Maybe your cousin in Manila watches them. Maybe your friends at uni found Thailand through one, and now they ask you what the actors are saying. Maybe you found one yourself at 2 a.m. and suddenly had a reason to listen to Thai for hours.
Thai BL has found fans far beyond Thailand. Here’s what it is, where it came from and how to watch it properly.
What is Thai BL?
BL stands for boys’ love: stories about a romance between two young men. The genre started in Japanese manga, and Wikipedia notes that Japanese BL comics had Thai readers as early as the 1990s.
In Thailand the TV dramas are often called Y series (from yaoi), and Wikipedia describes Thai BL as a genre that “explicitly adapts the content of Japanese BL to the Thai local context”. In practice that means Thai universities, Thai families, Thai food on the table and a lot of Thai spoken in a way you can actually follow.
Thai BL has its own fan tradition too: the khu jin, a pair of actors that fans, mostly women, imagine as a couple. Fans follow the pair from series to series, to fan meetings and onto social media.
Where did Thai BL come from?
Two titles opened the door, according to Wikipedia’s history of the genre. The 2007 film The Love of Siam, which has a romance between two boys at its heart, was an unexpected mainstream hit that grossed over ฿40 million. Then Love Sick (2014 to 2015) became the first Thai TV series with two gay leads. The scholar Thomas Baudinette calls it a “watershed moment” for queer romance on Thai screens.
Production took off from there. Streaming helped: online platforms could carry stories that broadcast TV often wouldn’t. The big producers include GMMTV, founded in 1995 as part of the music and media company GMM Grammy.
Which Thai BL series made it global?
A short, sourced timeline. All dates are the original Thai run, as listed on each series’ Wikipedia page.
| Series | Years | Studio | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| SOTUS: The Series | 2016 | GMMTV | An early GMMTV series, set in a university faculty |
| 2gether: The Series | 21 Feb – 15 May 2020 | GMMTV, Housestories 8 | 100 million LINE TV views within two months; went on Netflix in Thailand and the Philippines in July 2020 |
| I Told Sunset About You | 22 Oct – 19 Nov 2020 | Nadao Bangkok | Won International Drama of the Year at the 2021 Seoul International Drama Awards |
| Bad Buddy | 29 Oct 2021 – 21 Jan 2022 | GMMTV | Best LGBTQ+ Programme Made in Asia at the Content Asia Awards 2022 |
| KinnPorsche | 2 Apr – 9 Jul 2022 | Be On Cloud (aired on One31) | iQIYI’s first Thai original; a world tour that opened with two sold-out Bangkok shows |
| Only Friends | 12 Aug – 28 Oct 2023 | GMMTV | Best Series at the HiBL Awards 2024 |
I Told Sunset About You is the one people recommend to friends who “don’t watch BL”: a coming-of-age story in Phuket Old Town, and Wikipedia notes it drew visitors there. KinnPorsche is the opposite mood, a dark mafia drama, and its theme song matters for Thai music too (more in our T-pop guide).
Who watches Thai BL outside Thailand?
A lot of people, in a lot of places. Going by the Wikipedia pages above, series were dubbed into Filipino for TV and streaming in the Philippines, streamed in Japan (Wowow, Telasa, U-Next) and Taiwan, and I Told Sunset About You reached 9.4 out of 10 on the Chinese rating site Douban. Casts now hold fan meetings across Asia: the Only Friends cast went to Japan, Taipei, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Manila between late 2023 and August 2024.
Wikipedia also notes that international fans increasingly see Thai BL as its own thing rather than an offshoot of Japanese BL.
Fandom has a vocabulary. A superfan is a ติ่ง (ting), and the happy, can’t-stop-smiling feeling after a good episode is ฟิน (fin). Both are in our Thai slang dictionary. When your friend tells you the couple got back together in the finale, there’s only one reply:
จริงดิ
jing di
No way! / Seriously?!
Literally: “true (go on)”
Said with rising surprise, จริงดิ means “no way!”. Said flat, it means “of course it’s true”. จริงป่ะ (jing pa) is the same surprise as a question.

What do people debate about Thai BL?
Like any popular genre, it gets argued about, and both sides are worth knowing.
- Representation. BL put romance between two men on Thai TV, and the scholar Thomas Baudinette calls Love Sick a watershed for queer romance on Thai screens. The genre also adapts Japanese BL tropes, which are a fantasy, so it’s worth remembering that a series isn’t a documentary about LGBTQ+ lives in Thailand. Wikipedia also notes some backlash from conservative parts of Thai society.
- The actors are people. Fans pair actors on and off screen. The actors’ real private lives are their own. We never guess about anyone’s sexuality.
- Safety at events. Popularity has a downside: the KinnPorsche tour stop in Ho Chi Minh City was cancelled in February 2023 after threats against the actors, according to Wikipedia.
The wider context changed too. Thailand’s marriage equality law passed the Senate on 18 June 2024 and came into force on 23 January 2025, making Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia to recognise same-sex marriage.
Where can you watch Thai BL legally?
Use official channels. It’s better quality, it pays the people who made it, and it keeps more series coming.
- GMMTV’s official YouTube channel. Wikipedia’s GMMTV page says its dramas are simulcast there for international viewers, split into parts, with the full uncut episodes on partner platforms such as AIS Play, Viu, WeTV, Disney+ Hotstar and oneD.
- iQIYI carried KinnPorsche’s uncut version as its first Thai original.
- Netflix has carried some Thai series; 2gether, for example, was added in Thailand and the Philippines in July 2020.
What’s on which service changes by country and by month, so check the official channel or platform where you live (checked 14 October 2026). We don’t link unofficial uploads.
Can BL help with your Thai?
Honestly, yes, if you want it to. The dialogue is often everyday Bangkok Thai between friends: teasing, texting, “have you eaten?”, siblings bickering. Turn on Thai subtitles if they exist, pause on a line you half understood, and say it out loud. Watching with a cousin and asking “what did he just say?” counts as a lesson.
For the casual Thai the characters speak to each other, Reply Thai has a moment called Thai with friends your age: the relaxed Thai your cousins use, like “no way!”, “count me in!” and “how’ve you been?”. Practise replying, then press play.
