What is a lakorn? Thai TV dramas, explained

It’s 8.30 in the evening. The news has just finished, the remote is nowhere near you, and Mum, Yai and two aunties have gone completely quiet. Someone on screen is about to slap someone else. You don’t know who, or why, but you know you’re not allowed to talk until the advert break.
That’s a lakorn. Here’s what it is, why your family loves it, and how to watch one today.
What is a lakorn?
A lakorn (also spelled lakhorn) is a Thai TV drama. The word means a drama or a play, and at home it nearly always means the evening series.
The big difference from a Western soap opera: a lakorn ends. English Wikipedia describes it as a self-contained story with a finished plot, closer to a Latin American telenovela than to a soap that runs for decades. A typical lakorn runs for about three months, with two or three episodes a week.
The Thai Wikipedia article on Thai TV drama sums up the classic formula: stories that often centre on wealthy families, characters who are clearly good or clearly bad, theatrical acting, and a predictable, happy ending. Popular stories get remade again and again for new generations.
Why are lakorn on at 8.30 p.m.?
Because that’s prime time. The main lakorn slot starts around 20:30, right after the evening news, and runs to about 22:30, the most expensive advertising time on Thai TV, according to Thai Wikipedia. Smaller dramas run in the early evening, and popular lakorn often come back as afternoon reruns a couple of years later. That’s why Yai may have watched the same one twice and still gasps at the same scene.
The big broadcasters are Channel 3 and Channel 7, with Channel 5, Channel 8, One31 and GMM25 also making dramas. Channel 3 has been on air since 26 March 1970.
What happens in a lakorn?
You’ll recognise the shape even if you never followed a single plot. Going by Thai Wikipedia’s description and the genres English Wikipedia lists:
- Good versus evil, clearly labelled. You’ll know the villain in the first five minutes. So will Yai, and she’ll say so out loud.
- Big feelings. Theatrical acting is part of the style, not a flaw.
- Love, money and family. Romance, revenge and inheritance are classic engines of the plot.
- History and time travel. Period dramas set in the Ayutthaya era or the reign of King Chulalongkorn are a whole genre, and so are stories where someone wakes up in the past.
- Ghosts. Folk tales and ghost stories are a lakorn staple. If that’s your thing, see our guide to Thai ghosts.
- A happy ending. Usually. That’s the deal.
It’s fine to love the genre and tease it at the same time.
Which lakorn does everyone remember?
A few that come up again and again, with the details we could confirm:
| Lakorn | Year | Channel | Why people remember it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khu Kam | early 1990 | Channel 7 | Based on Thommayanti’s novel; English Wikipedia reports ratings of up to 40 |
| Kom Faek | 2008 | Channel 7 | Wikipedia calls it a record: almost 15 million viewers |
| Love Destiny | 21 Feb – 11 Apr 2018 | Channel 3 | A history student wakes up in 17th-century Ayutthaya; a 13.3% nationwide average and a peak of 18.6% in the finale |
| Girl from Nowhere | 2018; season 2 in 2021 | GMM25, then Netflix | A dark anthology series that reached a worldwide audience on Netflix |
Love Destiny starred Ranee Campen and Thanavat Vatthanaputi. Wikipedia notes it even boosted tourism to its filming locations, and it was followed by a 2022 film and a 2023 sequel series.
Is the lakorn still a big deal?
Less than it was. English Wikipedia reports that by mid-2024 Thai TV dramas faced “a sharp decline in viewership”. Channel 7 even dropped its Friday-night lakorn from January 2023 to show ONE Championship fights instead.
But the format is moving, not disappearing. Thai series now premiere on streaming services and reach fans abroad, from Girl from Nowhere to the boys’ love dramas in our Thai BL guide.
How do you have a lakorn night with your family?
This is the part no encyclopedia covers. Some honest tips from people who grew up on the sofa:
- Let the experts brief you. Ask Mum who’s who before it starts. She’ll explain the whole family tree, the villain’s backstory and which actor she likes, usually in that order.
- Don’t fight the pace. A lakorn has time. That’s the point.
- Ask, then ask again. You won’t catch every line, and that’s fine. Nobody minds a question in the advert break.
- React. A loud gasp at the right moment is fluent in any language.
Watching from abroad? Watch the same episode as Yai and talk about it on your next video call. She will have opinions. The line you’ll need most:
พูดอีกทีได้ไหม
phuut iik thii dai mai
พูดอีกทีได้ไหมครับ
phuut iik thii dai mai khrap
พูดอีกทีได้ไหมคะ
phuut iik thii dai mai kha
Could you say that again?
Literally: “speak again time can (question)”
Better than pretending. Yai would much rather repeat it than talk past you.

Can lakorn help your Thai?
Yes, in a gentle way. You hear a lot of family talk, from polite speech to shouting matches, and you can pause and replay. Some of us picked up a slightly theatrical Thai that way, and we wrote about that in why your Thai sounds like your mum.
