Thai by family, in numbers: official data 2026

By lukkrueng.com editorsLast checked Published

Adults of many mixed Thai backgrounds share Thai food at a picnic in a park.

If you’re Thai by family, you’ve probably wondered how many people share some version of your story. This page collects the official numbers. Each figure names its publisher, the exact table and the date it describes, and links to the source. We read every source on 14 October 2026.

Read this first. Countries count in different ways. Some count people born in Thailand, some count Thai citizens, some count what people say their ethnicity or ancestry is. Some count all three, in separate tables. We keep those apart, never add them into one world total, and say which is which. Where no number exists, we say that too. Where we did the arithmetic ourselves, we say “our sum” or “our calculation”.

How many half-Thai people are there?

Nobody knows the worldwide figure, and we won’t invent one. No international body counts people with one Thai parent, and most countries don’t publish a count by a parent’s country of birth.

The closest official figure we found is from Sweden. Statistics Sweden publishes the population born in Sweden by both parents’ country of birth. On 31 December 2025, 23,492 people born in Sweden had at least one parent born in Thailand (our sum of five SCB categories; see the Sweden section).

In the United States, the Census counts people who report Thai, alone or with another group. It does not publish a separate “half Thai” count (see the US section).

Where do Thai people live outside Thailand?

The cleanest measure to compare is country of birth: people living in a country who were born in Thailand. It counts people who moved, not their children.

People born in Thailand, living abroad: selected countries

Residents counted by country of birth (Thailand), from each country's official statistics. This counts people who moved, not their children. Reference dates differ by country.

  • Do not add these up into a world total: the countries count at different dates, and the US figure is a survey estimate.
  • Country of birth is not ethnicity or citizenship: some people born in Thailand don't identify as Thai, for example people born in refugee camps or to foreign parents, and many Thai people abroad were born somewhere else.
  • Norway is not in this chart: SSB's open tables count 'immigrants' (born abroad to two foreign-born parents), not everyone born in Thailand. See the Norway note below the Sweden section.

In Taiwan, Japan and Germany, the figures we could check count Thai citizens in the residence register instead, so we keep them apart from the chart above. In Taiwan most of them are migrant workers.

  • In Taiwan most Thai residents are migrant workers rather than families who settled. Germany's figure is from 2020 and counts citizens only. South Korea is described in the text instead, because its figure includes short-term visitors.

South Korea counts Thai citizens staying in the country for any length of time: 155,432 on 31 August 2026. Of those, 106,738 (69%, our calculation) were on short-term visa-exempt status, and 10,402 held marriage-migrant (F-6) visas (Korea Immigration Service, August 2026).

Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in March 2023 that it “stands ready to assist and protect more than 1.2 million Thai nationals abroad” (MFA press briefing, 15 March 2023). It is a rounded figure, and the briefing doesn’t say how it was worked out.

How many Thai Americans are there?

The American Community Survey (ACS) gives three useful numbers. The gap between them is where many mixed Thai Americans show up.

Thai Americans by three measures, 2024

Three American Community Survey 2024 1-year estimates. 'Thai alone or in any combination' counts everyone who reported Thai, alone or with another race or Asian group; 'Thai alone' counts people who reported only Thai.

  • Self-reported, from a sample survey, so every figure has a margin of error (shown at 90%).
  • The gap between the first and last rows (about 150,000, our calculation) is people who reported Thai together with another race or Asian group. That likely includes many people with one Thai parent, but not only them; the Census does not publish a 'half Thai' count.

About 150,000 more people report Thai “alone or in any combination” than “Thai alone” (our calculation). They reported Thai together with another race or another Asian group. That likely includes many people with one Thai parent, but not only them, so it isn’t a “half Thai” count. The ACS 1-year estimate for Thai alone or in any combination was 342,917 in 2019 and 361,318 in 2024. Year-to-year changes are mostly inside the margin of error.

How many Thai people live in the UK and Australia?

  • England and Wales (Census 2021): 49,709 usual residents born in Thailand (ONS census API). In the detailed ethnic group question, 39,962 people were recorded as “Asian, Asian British or Asian Welsh: Thai” and 1,711 more as “Other ethnic group: Thai” (ONS TS022 via Nomis). People who ticked a “Mixed” box are not in those two lines. Scotland and Northern Ireland run their own censuses, which we haven’t checked yet.
  • Australia (Census 2021): 83,779 people born in Thailand, and 91,942 people who reported Thai ancestry, of whom 23,332 were born in Australia (ABS QuickStats 2021). People can give up to two ancestries, so many of those 23,332 will also have another one. In 2011, 45,464 people in Australia were born in Thailand (ABS QuickStats 2011). 66,576 people used Thai at home in 2021 (ABS Census data, table C21_T10).

How many people in Sweden have a Thai parent?

Sweden is the one country we found that publishes the numbers luk khrueng readers usually want: people born in Sweden, broken down by their parents’ country of birth.

Born in Sweden with a parent born in Thailand, 2025

People born in Sweden, by where their parents were born, where at least one parent was born in Thailand. 'Other foreign-born' means born abroad, but not in Thailand. SCB counts birthplace, not nationality or ethnicity. Population on 31 December 2025.

  • Together these come to 23,492 people (our sum of the five categories, which do not overlap).
  • SCB adds small random noise to protect privacy (the cell-key method), so totals can differ by one or two.
  • A parent's country of birth is not their ethnicity or citizenship. People born outside Sweden are not in these rows.

The biggest group, 16,555 people, have a mother born in Thailand and a father born in Sweden. That reflects who moved: in 2025, about 79% of the 46,036 people in Sweden born in Thailand were women.

  • In 2025 about 79% of people in Sweden born in Thailand were women (36,288 women, 9,747 men).

Norway and Denmark publish Thai figures too, but not in a way that counts children with one Thai parent:

  • Norway (SSB): 23,203 immigrants with a Thai background and 1,519 “Norwegian-born to immigrant parents” on 1 January 2026. The second group has two foreign-born parents. We found no SSB table for people with one Thai-born parent by country.
  • Denmark (DST): 15,480 people born in Thailand on 1 January 2026 (the chart above). By origin, DST counts 12,770 immigrants and 1,265 descendants with Thai origin on 1 July 2026 (FOLK1C). Under DST’s rules, a child with one Danish-born parent who is a Danish citizen counts as of Danish origin. So most children of Thai–Danish couples are not in the 1,265.

How common are Thai mixed marriages?

  • In Thailand: a study from Mahidol University’s Institute for Population and Social Research, using a 1% sample of the 2010 census, found 60,220 Thai–Western couples living in Thailand, under 1% of all married couples. In 94% of them the Western partner was the man. The largest groups of Western partners were British (25.0%), American (15.9%) and German (13.4%) (Phuengsamran et al., 2023). The same paper cites a 2004 government survey that found 15,284 women with foreign husbands in 17 provinces of the Northeast. We couldn’t open that original report.
  • In Japan: Japan’s vital statistics count marriages by both spouses’ nationality, and Thailand is listed separately.

We found no official Thai figure for all registered marriages between Thai citizens and foreigners, and no Swedish or British table that names Thailand.

How many people speak Thai?

  • Languages of Thailand: “more than 70 living languages, belonging to five language families”, with Thai as the national language, according to Suwilai Premsrirat of Mahidol University (Journal of the Royal Institute of Thailand, 2011). She lists Lao Isan, Kham Mueang (Northern Thai; “Kammuang” in her spelling), Northern Khmer, Patani Malay and Mon as “potentially endangered” (page 57).
  • Language at home, 2010 census: of 65,981,659 people counted, the language recorded for 59,866,190 was Thai, which is 90.7% (our calculation; UNdata, from Thailand’s National Statistical Office). The table has no separate Isan or Kham Mueang category, so “Thai” here very likely includes regional languages like these (our reading; the table doesn’t say). Don’t read 90.7% as speakers of Standard Thai only.
  • Isan (Lao): Mahidol University researchers counted “more than 11 million speakers”, 71% of the population of the “Korat Plateau” (the Northeast), using survey data from 1992–1995 (Suwilai and Naraset). That data is now about 30 years old.

If your family speaks Isan at home, our Isan family words page is for you.

Thai restaurants abroad

Thailand’s Department of Foreign Trade counted 17,478 Thai restaurants worldwide, about 6,850 of them in the United States, according to its data as reported in January 2024 by The Nation. This is a government count of known restaurants, not a census.

What we couldn’t find

  • A worldwide, or any official, count of people with one Thai parent, other than Sweden’s.
  • The US 2020 Census detailed count for Thai Americans on an official page we could open.
  • A Destatis figure for Germany newer than 2020 that we could retrieve, and an SSB table for everyone in Norway born in Thailand.
  • Thai government statistics on registered marriages to foreigners, and the Bank of Thailand’s worker-remittance series.
  • A reliable count of Thai temples abroad.

Questions people ask

How many half-Thai people are there?

Nobody publishes a worldwide count. The closest official figure we found is from Sweden: on 31 December 2025, 23,492 people born in Sweden had at least one parent born in Thailand (our sum of five SCB categories). The US Census estimates that 361,318 people report Thai alone or with another group (ACS 2024), but it does not count mixed-heritage Thai people separately. In Australia, 23,332 people born in Australia reported Thai ancestry in 2021.

How many Thai people live in the United States?

The American Community Survey 2024 1-year estimates show 361,318 people who report Thai alone or in any combination (margin of error ±16,269), 211,448 who report Thai alone, and 268,180 people born in Thailand. All three are survey estimates.

How many Thai people live in Sweden?

Statistics Sweden counts 46,036 people born in Thailand living in Sweden on 31 December 2025, about 79% of them women. Another 23,492 people born in Sweden have at least one parent born in Thailand (our sum of SCB's categories).

How many Thai people live in the UK?

The 2021 Census for England and Wales counted 49,709 usual residents born in Thailand, and 39,962 people whose detailed ethnic group was recorded as Asian: Thai, plus 1,711 coded under Other: Thai. Scotland and Northern Ireland run separate censuses.

How much money is sent home to Thailand?

The World Bank puts personal remittances received by Thailand at about US$11.9 billion in 2025, or 2.06% of GDP. That covers personal transfers and pay earned by residents working abroad, not only money from Thai workers to family.

How many languages are spoken in Thailand?

More than 70, according to Suwilai Premsrirat of Mahidol University, writing in the Journal of the Royal Institute of Thailand (2011). They belong to five language families. Thai is the national language.
