Thai, literally: 30 phrases that make luk khrueng laugh

Some Thai words are pure poetry once you take them apart. Others sound like a toddler named them, and honestly, that’s the charm. If you’re luk khrueng and grew up hearing Thai at home, you may have said ตู้เย็น a thousand times before noticing it means “cold cupboard”. This list is for that moment.
Every word here comes from the Reply Thai app’s “Thai, literally” cards, with meanings checked against the Royal Institute dictionary.
Why are Thai words so literal?
Thai doesn’t change word endings. Linguists call it an analytic language: verbs never change form. Apart from compounds and borrowed words, most Thai words are one syllable, so new ideas are often built by putting plain words side by side. Water plus hard is ice. Machine plus fly is a plane.
That makes Thai a puzzle you can solve. Learn a handful of small words (heart, water, face, mother, child, fire) and you can take apart a surprising number of longer ones. It also explains why your Thai parent sometimes says things in English that sound oddly concrete: they’re translating the pieces.
What do everyday Thai household words mean literally?
| # | Thai | Say it | Literally | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ตู้เย็น | tuu yen | cold cupboard | fridge |
| 2 | น้ำแข็ง | naam khaeng | hard water | ice |
| 3 | ห้องน้ำ | horng naam | water room | bathroom, toilet |
| 4 | แม่กุญแจ | mae gun-jae | mother lock | padlock |
The freezer gets its own joke: ช่องแข็ง (chorng khaeng), “the hard compartment”. And the key to a padlock is ลูกกุญแจ (luuk gun-jae), the “child lock”. Thai uses แม่, mother, for the big main one of something, so a river is แม่น้ำ (mae naam), “mother water”. Family everywhere, even on the front door.
Worth knowing on any visit: ห้องน้ำอยู่ไหน (horng naam yuu nai), “where’s the water room?”.
What do Thai words for getting around mean literally?
| # | Thai | Say it | Literally | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | รถไฟ | rot fai | fire vehicle | train |
| 6 | รถไฟฟ้า | rot fai faa | sky-fire vehicle | electric train, Bangkok’s Skytrain |
| 7 | เครื่องบิน | khrueang bin | flying machine | aeroplane |
| 8 | ม้าลาย | maa laai | striped horse | zebra |
The train makes sense once you picture a steam engine. The Skytrain needs one more step: ไฟฟ้า (fai faa), “sky fire”, is electricity. So an electric train is a vehicle powered by lightning, which is how it feels at rush hour. A zebra crossing is ทางม้าลาย (thaang maa laai), the “striped-horse path”.
Why are so many Thai words about the heart (ใจ)?
Thai puts feelings and character in ใจ (jai), the heart. Learner guides list at least 40 common ใจ words, and you’ll hear them in every family argument and every family hug.
| # | Thai | Say it | Literally | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | ใจเย็น | jai yen | cool heart | calm, patient |
| 10 | ใจร้อน | jai rorn | hot heart | impatient, quick-tempered |
| 11 | น้ำใจ | naam jai | heart water | kindness nobody asked for |
| 12 | ดีใจ | dii jai | good heart | glad |
| 13 | เสียใจ | sia jai | spoiled heart | sad, sorry |
| 14 | ใจดี | jai dii | heart good | kind |
| 15 | ใจลอย | jai loi | floating heart | miles away, not listening |
| 16 | ใจหาย | jai haai | the heart disappears | that sudden drop in your chest |
Two things to notice. First, word order matters: ดีใจ is glad, but flip it to ใจดี and it means kind. Second, in a hot country, cool is a compliment. ใจเย็นๆ (jai yen jai yen), “cool heart, cool heart”, is what you’ll hear when someone means “easy, take it slow”.
ใจหาย has a bonus life: after another word it means “very”. แพงใจหาย (phaeng jai haai) is “so expensive your heart disappears”.
Which Thai food words make no sense in English?
| # | Thai | Say it | Literally | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17 | ไข่ดาว | khai daao | star egg | fried egg, yolk whole |
| 18 | ลูกชิ้น | luuk chin | round pieces | meatballs, fishballs |
| 19 | กินเป็นไหม | gin pen mai | eat, know-how, or not? | can you handle this food? |
| 20 | กล้วยๆ | gluai gluai | banana banana | easy-peasy |
ลูก means child, and also anything small and round, so meatballs are “round pieces”. Number 19 is the one you’ll actually be asked. When an aunty holds out durian and says กินเป็นไหม, she means “is this food you can handle?”. Answer กินเป็น (gin pen), “I can”, and watch her smile. And if anything is easy, หมูๆ (muu muu), “pig pig”, means the same as banana banana.
How does Thai describe feelings and people sideways?
| # | Thai | Say it | Literally | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 21 | อกหัก | ok hak | broken chest | heartbroken |
| 22 | น้ำตา | naam taa | eye water | tears |
| 23 | ตายแล้ว | taai laew | dead already | oh my goodness! |
| 24 | หน้าบาง | naa baang | thin face | easily embarrassed |
| 25 | หูเบา | huu bao | light ears | believes anything |
| 26 | ปากหวาน | paak waan | sweet mouth | smooth with compliments |
| 27 | ขี้อาย | khii aai | poo + shy | shy |
| 28 | แมวมอง | maew morng | watching cat | talent scout |
English breaks your heart. Thai breaks your chest. Nobody has died in ตายแล้ว either: it’s for dropped plates and grandchildren who suddenly grew tall, and aunties stretch it to ตายแล้ววว.
The opposite of a thin face is หน้าหนา (naa naa), a “thick face”, for someone who never blushes. And yes, ขี้ on its own means poo. In front of another word it means “prone to”: ขี้เกียจ (khii giat) is lazy and ขี้ลืม (khii luem) is forgetful. It isn’t rude. Giggling is still allowed.
Which Thai words have no agreed explanation?
| # | Thai | Say it | Literally | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 29 | ผีเสื้อ | phii suea | ghost shirt | butterfly |
| 30 | หน้าม้า | naa maa | horse face | a fringe (bangs), or a shill |
The Royal Institute dictionary defines ผีเสื้อ without saying where the name comes from, so families invent their own reasons. A little ghost in a pretty shirt that appears and vanishes is a good one.
หน้าม้า has two lives. As a haircut, Wiktionary traces it to the hair that falls between a horse’s ears. On its own it’s also a shill: the “customer” who loudly buys first so others follow. Ask for หน้าม้า at the hairdresser, not at the market.
Which ones can you actually use with family?
Nearly all of them. These are ordinary words, not slang, so ตู้เย็น, น้ำแข็ง and ห้องน้ำ work with anyone from your cousin to your great-aunt. Three easy ways in:
- Use a heart word back. When Yai says ใจเย็นๆ, you’ve just been given a phrase you can return the next time someone else is in a hurry.
- Answer the food question. กินเป็น at the table gets more warmth per syllable than anything else on this list.
- Say the person words about yourself. Calling yourself ขี้ลืม when you forget a name is charming. Calling an uncle หูเบา is a family joke you should leave to the family.
If you want the words that aren’t in a dictionary yet, our Thai slang dictionary, with who you can say each word to picks up where this list stops. Thai nicknames play with plain words too: here’s why your cousins are called Ball and Bank. And if your Thai comes out extra polite, here’s why your Thai sounds like your mum. Where can you hear these words said?
Reading “cold cupboard” is fun. Hearing a relative say ตู้เย็น and knowing what to answer is better. Reply Thai has these words as “Thai, literally” cards, and its Family meals moment lets you practise replying at the table, from being fed to praising the cook.

Questions people ask
What does jai yen mean literally?
ใจเย็น (jai yen) is “cool heart”: ใจ is heart and เย็น is cool. It means calm and patient. Doubled, ใจเย็นๆ (jai yen jai yen) is what people say for “easy, take it slow”. Its opposite is ใจร้อน (jai rorn), “hot heart”, which means impatient or quick-tempered.
Why is ice “hard water” in Thai?
Because that is exactly what the word says. น้ำแข็ง (naam khaeng) joins น้ำ, water, and แข็ง, hard. Thai often names things by joining two plain words, so น้ำตา (naam taa), “eye water”, is tears and ห้องน้ำ (horng naam), “water room”, is the bathroom.
Why are so many Thai words about the heart (ใจ)?
In Thai, feelings and character are described through ใจ (jai), the heart. Glad is ดีใจ, “good heart”, sorry is เสียใจ, “spoiled heart”, and kindness is น้ำใจ, “heart water”. Learner guides list dozens of these ใจ words, and they turn up in everyday family talk.
What are some funny Thai words?
Favourites taken literally: ม้าลาย (maa laai), a zebra, is a “striped horse”; ไข่ดาว (khai daao), a fried egg, is a “star egg”; อกหัก (ok hak), heartbroken, is a “broken chest”; and ผีเสื้อ (phii suea), a butterfly, is a “ghost shirt”, which nobody can fully explain.
Is it rude when Thai words start with ขี้?
No. On its own ขี้ (khii) means poo, but in front of another word it means “prone to”: ขี้อาย (khii aai) is shy and ขี้เกียจ (khii giat) is lazy. Yai calling you ขี้อาย is a gentle description, not a rude word.
Can I use these phrases with my Thai family?
Almost all of them. They are ordinary words, not slang, so ตู้เย็น, น้ำแข็ง or ใจเย็นๆ are fine with anyone. Be gentle with words that describe a person, such as หูเบา (huu bao), “light ears”, or ปากหวาน (paak waan), “sweet mouth”: they are best said with a smile, or about yourself.
