Thai music genres: luk thung, mor lam, string and rock

There’s a song that comes on at every Thai family party, and every adult in the room knows the words except you. Or there’s the car-radio station Dad switches to the moment you land in Thailand, all trumpets and heartbreak. That’s Thai music, and it comes in a few big families.
Here’s a map, with the singers to know and nothing you need to pretend you’ve heard of. No lyrics, just names to search and official channels.
What is luk thung?
Luk thung means “child of the fields”: Thai country music, born in the mid-20th century, about rural life, migration and hardship. Wikipedia credits the name to Chamnong Rangsikul, whose TV show became Phleng Luk Thung in 1964. Today its electrified, pop-influenced form is described as Thailand’s most popular kind of music.
The names your parents may know:
- Suraphol Sombatcharoen (1930–1968), the “King of Luk Thung”, sometimes called the Thai Elvis.
- Pumpuang Duangjan (1961–1992), the “Queen of Luk Thung”, who brought luk thung into the electronic era. She died of lupus in 1992, aged 30, and is still loved.
- Tai Orathai, born 1980 in Ubon Ratchathani, singing luk thung and mor lam since 2000.
What is mor lam?
Mor lam is a song form from Laos that is also hugely popular in Isan, northeast Thailand. Mo means a master or expert and lam the style of singing. Wikipedia notes that lowland Laos and Isan are essentially one cultural region, so if your family is from Isan, this may be the music of your grandparents’ village.
Its classic sound is the khaen, a bamboo mouth organ; in some Lao styles it was the only accompaniment. UNESCO inscribed khaen music of the Lao people on its list of intangible cultural heritage in 2017. As people from Isan moved to Bangkok for work, mor lam came with them, and it became a link to home. Its electric cousin mor lam sing gets its name from the English word “racing”, from Isan’s motorbike scene.
Names to search: Jintara Poonlarp (born 1969, Roi Et), with around 50 albums, and Siriporn Ampaipong (born 1964, Udon Thani), from a mor lam family. Mor lam even reached European festivals: the Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band has played Glastonbury.
If your family speaks Isan at home, see our page on Isan family words.
What are Thai “songs for life”?
Phleng phuea chiwit, “songs for life”, are Thailand’s protest and folk-rock songs. Wikipedia traces the genre to the student uprising of 14 October 1973. Caravan was the first band, borrowing from American protest music. Carabao became one of its biggest bands, and their album Made in Thailand (1984) sold over four million copies, according to Wikipedia. If an uncle plays one band loudly at every party, it may be this one.
What is string, and who are the Thai pop legends?
String is the Thai name for the pop and rock that grew out of 1960s bands copying Western guitar groups. By the 1990s it owned the mainstream, led by two record companies: RS and GMM Grammy, founded in 1983.
- Thongchai “Bird” McIntyre, born 1958 in Bangkok, released his debut album in 1986. Wikipedia lists his 2002 album Chud Rab Kaek as the best-selling album in Thai music history, and he was named a National Artist in 2023. His are songs many Thai mums sing along to.
- Christina Aguilar was the first Thai female singer to sell over a million cassettes.
- Mai Charoenpura’s 1992 album sold 2.6 million copies, according to Wikipedia.
- GMM Grammy’s long list of artists also includes bands like Silly Fools, Loso and Bodyslam, and pop stars like Tata Young.
Bird and Tata Young are also on our list of famous luk khrueng. For the new generation of Thai pop, and the Thai stars in K-pop, see our T-pop guide.
Why are so many Thai songs so sad?
Spend an evening in a Thai karaoke room and you’ll notice. A huge share of luk thung and Thai pop is about leaving home, missing someone and love gone wrong. Thai has a word for that feeling: อกหัก (ok hak), heartbroken, literally a “snapped chest”. When it happens, friends feed you, sing sad songs with you at karaoke and promise it gets better.
How do you share Thai music with your family?
Ask, don’t guess. “Who did you listen to when you were my age?” is one of the best questions you can ask a Thai parent. Then search the name with the artist’s or label’s official channel, and play it in the car. Expect singing.
When the cousins are heading out to karaoke, all you need to say is:
ไปไหม
pai mai
Wanna come?
Literally: “go question”
Verb + ไหม = a question. ไหม rises; ไม่ (not) falls. You’ll hear it said มั้ย.
