Thai horror movies: the scariest ones, and why they work

Most Thai families have a ghost story, and Thai cinema has been turning them into films for decades. If you grew up with cousins daring each other to watch one with the lights off, you’ll know a few of these already.

Here are the Thai horror films people still talk about, with dates, directors and facts checked, plus a few to watch with the family when Yai says she isn’t scared (she is).

Because the ghosts are local. Thai horror rarely needs to invent a monster. It borrows from beliefs many families still live with: spirit houses in the garden, the story of the woman who waited for her husband, the spirit in the banana tree. When a Thai film puts one of those on screen, the audience already knows the story.

The other ingredient is family. Many Thai horror films are set at home, among family. For the folklore behind the films, see our guide to Thai ghosts.

If someone screams and then apologises for scaring the room, the classic reply:

ไม่เป็นไร

mai pen rai

It’s okay. / No worries.

Literally: “not be anything”

What you say when someone apologises to you. Careful: after an offer it can sound like “no thanks”.

Is Thai horror too scary for kids?

Thai horror runs from family comedy to genuinely intense (The Medium and The Maid are at the intense end), so check the rating for each film. Check the rating where you live before a family night. With younger kids, Pee Mak is the usual starting point, and you know your children best.

Where can you watch Thai horror legally?

Rights change by country and by month, so we won’t promise a platform (checked 14 October 2026). Some films, like The Maid, were Netflix releases. Search your local services under both the English and the Thai title. We don’t link unofficial uploads, and there are no posters or stills on this page for the same reason.

How can Thai horror help your Thai?

Horror is full of short, loud, useful Thai: “who’s there?”, “don’t go in there!”, “I’m scared”. Watching with cousins and asking what someone just screamed is a lesson in itself. For more films to share, see our Thai movie canon, and for the family nostalgia side, what we grew up with.

Reply Thai’s Thai with friends your age moment has the casual Thai you hear between cousins on the sofa, like “no way!” and “count me in!”.
